Throw Out the Training Department - Until It Has a Plan

Are these scenarios familiar?

You provide training for 100 employees by delivering one session at the lowest cost.
Nothing changes after slide-review “training” of standard operating procedures.
Two divisions are fighting; morale is low. You are asked to provide team-building.

What is the return on investment? Will learning happen? Emergency training solutions rarely are successful. In the best case, a dynamic trainer may receive good evaluations. However, knowledge and skills are unlikely to change. Programs and human resource systems designed and delivered by crisis management, often without integration with other organizational activities, are not the solution.

What is the alternative?

Plan strategically for training just as you do for the rest of your business. Look long-term and develop a training curriculum to meet current and future needs and escape the reactive environment of “emergency” training requests or the latest training fad.
